cookie1On Easter Saturday we received an emergency call for help after a pony was found abandoned to die on waste ground in Benijofar.

Spotted by a group of children, the pony was in a shocking state - half bald and covered in mud and faeces.

Our volunteers rushed to the scene with an officer from Benijofar police. When they arrived they found the pony lying on a pathway.

It looked as though she had simply lain down to die. She could not have survived much longer. If itcookie3 had not been for the children who found her and the fast action of Benijofar police and council calling us, we would have been dealing with a dead pony.

The pony had obviously suffered long-term neglect before being abandoned. Her hooves had not been cut and so had grown upward, deforming her feet, legs and shoulders. She has laminitis and is likely to have suffered permanent damage.

But she is quite a young pony and very determined so we have every hope that we can nurse her back to a reasonable state of health and allow her to live in comfort at the Centre. We’ve called her Cookie because she’s a tough little cookie.

cookie4Caring for Cookie is not going to be cheap. She will need a great deal of veterinary care on top of the usual costs for feeding and caring for a pony. As EHCRC receives no official funding, relying totally on donations from members of the public, we need help to look after Cookie.

We urgently need sponsors for Cookie so that we can give her the best chance. She has obviously suffered a great deal in her life and she now deserves to be happy and well cared for. It is always amazing at the Centre when we can nurse an animal that has suffered back to health and happiness, and being a sponsor makes you part of this process.
