Bronson

Rescue Date - 1 October 2010

We received a phone call from the Guardia Civil informing us that they had found an injured horse in Almoradi. When we got there, there was a beautiful, pure Spanish stallion aged around 9 years old lying in a field along the main road. Upon approaching him we could see serious damage to his head.  It became apparent he had a deep head wound which was oozing blood; Bronson had obviously been hit with something sharp and heavy to cause such a deep and serious wound.  He was losing a lot of blood, was wondering and unable to keep his balance; he then collapsed trying to drink some water from the round. The volunteers from Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre struggled to get him standing as he was tipping over and staggering to one side due the serious injury inflicted upon him but eventually managed to get him on his feet again and get him into a trailer.

Once arriving at the Rescue Centre the vet was immediately called out. The hit to his head had been so severe that it had fractured his skull and damaged nerves on his left side. Not only was there concern of permanent and severe brain damage but also concern of infections due to the severe nature of the blow to the head by a large metal object which had sliced through the horse’s skull.

Thankfully, Bronson has made gradual improvement and has healed quite well since his rescue. Thanks to his speedy rescue and being attended to with medical treatment his wound has healed and he showed great strength in overcoming his injuries.  He still does not walk or hold his head straight but he is able eat, drink and negotiate his way around. Although physically strong the damage to his brain, eye and inner ear will be permanent; it is thought that he may need to wear an eye patch in the future and he will need ongoing medical treatment.  He has found a companion, little Samson, the mini; the two are now often stabled together and are best friends.

He has been now been sterilized and has improved so much he has been able to join the other rescue horses in his very own paddock at the Rescue Centre each day.   Bronson is now able to enjoy more space and freedom whilst socialising with all the other rescue horses but will require loving care and ongoing medical treatment for the rest of his life which he will spend at the Centre.
