Sophia
Found in Almoradi tied up to a tree, in foal and starving, was this gentle mare who was around 15 years old. She didnt have access to water or shelter. She was saved from a life of suffering inflicted upon her by gypsies and from almost certainly being in permanent foal, or ever being able to gain weight and condition between each foal. Also rescued with her were Jake who is Sophia’s son, and two minis who we have named Nelson and Napoleon. A supporter of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre very kindly cared for these horses until we could bring them to the Centre. Sophia is stabled next to Delilah our other mare in foal. The two are best friends. Since arriving at the Centre Sophia has slowly gained weight and condition and she is due to give birth to her foal imminently. She will live a good life here at the Centre where her baby will be born and cared for.
Update April 2011
Sophia, one of our mares in foal has an infection in her uterus, which it is feared could affect the foal. Dorothea our vet at the Centre had to prescribe her antibiotics to try and clear the infection but there is a problem in that the tablets could potentially harm the foal which isn’t due to be born just yet.
Update 19 April 2011
A scan was performed last week on Sophia which showed the foal was still alive but a more recent scan has revealed that sadly the foal is getting weaker. Rod, Sue and the volunteers are hoping for a miracle as it is now feared that the foal may not survive. Further updates will be given as they unfold.
Update September 2011Katy Rose was born on July 16th 2011 at 6:30pm out in the field, a beautiful surprise as normally mares give birth at night when there is nobody around. Katy Rose is an exact replica of her mother in every aspect, and they are both doing wonderfully. Katy Rose spends her days playing with Harry Trotter (Delilah’s son).
