Christiana
Rescued: July 10, 2015

Christiana was found barricaded within a tiny wire enclosure near San Javier, southeast of Murcia, and had to be cut free by police during her rescue.

Rod met four police officers at the site and two medical officers were also on standby in case of violent opposition from Christiana’s former owners. Luckily, we managed to remove her safely without incident.

We were so pleased to see police taking animal welfare seriously, and officers thanked us at the scene, saying they would not have been able to act to save Christiana without us, as she would have had nowhere to go.

Christiana’s eyes were so badly infected that she had red raw lines running down both sides of her face. She was also malnourished, riddled with parasites and could barely walk due to painfully overgrown hooves.

Christiana the donkey before rescue

But right from the beginning, Christiana – who we named after Sue’s grandmother – was an extremely loving and affectionate donkey. She was a little timid, but greatly accepted any cuddles we gave her.

We gently washed and treated Christiana’s infected eyes each day. Once her condition improved, we introduced Christiana to our donkey field, where she instantly made friends with Gin and Tonic.

We still pop out as often as we can to give Christiana the one-on-one cuddles she loves so much.
