Eeyore
Rescued: July 7, 2017

The moment we laid eyes on Eeyore, we knew this young donkey had suffered a terrible time. Very thin and bearing nasty scars across his nose from being forced to wear a too-tight halter for far too long, he also had a broken tail. We honestly cannot imagine what awful trauma this little boy must have lived through to cause that.

Eeyore was found wandering a road, apparently abandoned, and was brought to our rescue centre by Almoradí police on July 7, 2017. We can’t praise these police officers enough for acting swiftly yet again to help save an animal in distress. We believe their quick action is evidence that our work to build relationships with local authorities and improve animal welfare practices here in Spain is slowly but surely paying off.

As he arrived without any kind of identification tags, we can never be fully sure of Eeyore’s history. But he was quite nervous and head shy, which indicates rough treatment in the past.

We do know that many owners often don’t want donkey stallions because they can’t do anything with them. We suspect he’d been tied up all his life for this reason – hence the scarring on his nose – and then simply dumped to get rid of him.

We decided to name this donkey Eeyore not because of his temperament, which is really quite lovely and bright, but because of his big floppy ears, that he often holds only halfway up. The name seems to suit him to perfection.
