Lola The Second

Lola was found at San Javier’s El Mirador in a horrific state, absolutely skeletal and suffering from a condition called Sweeney, a wasting away of the muscles and damaged joints from being overworked. We believe she was about 28 years old when rescued.

Lola’s left shoulder had such severe nerve damage that it was partly paralysed and could not be cured, but our specialist farrier created special adjusted shoes to help make her more comfortable.

Despite her past abuse, Lola was such a lovely, loving horse. She was just so gentle, kind and patient with everything and was so happy to have food that she would eat almost non-stop. She really appreciated every minute of her time with us and was a beautiful, big horse. She must have once been magnificent.

Lola liked to lie down a lot and favoured one side because of her frozen shoulder. Sadly, because her hips protruded so much, the bones slowly started to come through the skin and she got an infection that could not be cured. We eventually had to put this lovely old lady to sleep.
