Ruppert
Rescued: June, 2019
In June 2019, our rescue centre had an unexpected visitor – a little piglet named Ruppert, who had miraculously escaped from a neighbour’s yard in our community, seemingly on a mission to rescue himself. The situation took a heart-wrenching turn when the original owner, oblivious to Ruppert’s escape, claimed him back with intentions to raise him for meat in less-than-ideal conditions.
Facing the dilemma of letting Ruppert go back to a terrible fate, a compassionate volunteer stepped in, deciding to purchase the pig to ensure he could stay at the rescue centre and enjoy the best possible life. While typically hesitant to contribute funds to those with questionable intentions, the urgency of the situation left us with no alternative.
Ruppert has grown up embodying the joy that comes from a life free from harm. It’s unfortunate that only a few pigs get the opportunity to experience such happiness. In a world where millions face less fortunate fates, Ruppert’s story stands as a beacon of hope.
To honour our strong-minded piggy, a humorous song, reminiscent of Benny Hill’s Fred Scuttle, was composed and performed by the talented Paul Gee.
Ruppert, the self-rescuing pig, has turned into a 300-kilo giant and continues to bring love and laughter to our sanctuary. We aspire that his story will serve as a catalyst, reshaping perceptions of pigs and encouraging a greater consideration for these remarkable beings.
