RomeoRescue Date - 9 July 2009

Malnourished, covered in tics and mites and with scabs and sores on his legs, Romeo was a sorry sight when he arrived at the Centre in July 2009.

Only a youngster, Romeo had been kept alone in a pen in the garden of a weekend home. He had no food, water or shelter.

When neighbours complained, the Seprona (countryside arm of the Guardia) acted quickly. Armed with a court order they seized Romeo, handing him over to us.

As well as the signs of physical neglect, Romeo appeared depressed. Like horses, donkeys are pack animals and should never be kept alone. When he was led out of his enclosure he showed no interest in the people who had come to take him or in his surroundings. But almost as soon as he arrived at the Centre and came face to face with our first donkey, Charity, his spirits lifted.

As he was so young, Romeo had luckily not suffered any permanent damage from the neglect. He now lives happily at the Centre and has turned into a very lively and often naughty little donkey.
