George

George and AnaRescue date: 7th November 2009
Kept permanently stabled in a livery yard, George became so bored that he started chewing his stable door. For his owners the solution to this behaviour was simple – they cut off his teeth with an angle grinder! Unbelievably, this horrific practice is not unusual, with many ‘problem’ horses being dealt with in this way.
The owners also continued to jump George excessively causing his back legs to swell.
Furthermore, George was involved in Spanish fiestas where, at one, he was so malnourished that he collapsed. Believed to be dead, George was loaded on to the meat lorry and ready to be taken away when he started to regain consciousness. This event was witnessed by an English family who were so horrified they bought George and, thankfully, he became their much loved pet until circumstances forced them to move back to the UK and he finally came to us.
George has adapted well to life here and has become a Pony Club superstar; his gentle nature makes him a hit with the children and also makes him an ideal horse to ride.

Update 25th November 2011
Volunteers at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre were lost for words when a Spanish teacher of equine studies from Elche arrived at the centre announcing that she had previously owned George many years ago.
Ana Sempere told us of how George was born in Lisboa, Portugal on 21st April 1987, making him now 24 years old. George was brought to Spain when he was 3, and a friend of Ana owned him for 12 years until Ana chose to buy him.
Amazingly, Ana informed us that George was once a professional showjumper and even achieved a gold medal in the Comunidad Valenciana, 1998. George had been jumping to heights of 4ft and had grown into a real star. When George later developed problems with his tendons Ana retired him from jumping and continued simply with flatwork.
When Ana sold George she did so through her livery yard, which meant she had no idea who the new owners were... Unfortunately that's when George's life took a turn for the worst.
Ana told us of how she believed George was dead for many years, and it wasn’t until one of our new local farriers Enrique, who takes the place of international farrier and friend Tony when he is unavailable, recognized George from the past. Enrique had been Ana’s farrier when she owned George, and so told Ana of his whereabouts.  Ana was reunited with George in his field, commenting that this is a wonderful place for horses like George to end up and wished that all horses could go somewhere like this.  She will be becoming more involved with the centre by both volunteering and spreading the word!
George is now a strong character amongst the many horses, ponies, and donkeys here at the centre. He now once again has companionship, love, comfort, food, and is only lightly exercised. George is now back at the top, and will be for the rest of his life.
