We also always need a hand with the ongoing running of the centre, from fundraising and event organising to mucking out stables, feeding horses and building fences and shelters. Return to our general volunteering page for more details.

Charity shop volunteer salesperson

Volunteers are needed to staff our network of charity shops across the Alicante region in Spain. We rely entirely on donations to fund our animal welfare work and income from our charity shops is crucial to covering the hefty ongoing feeding and care costs of our many horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment.

How you will help:

• Serve our customers.
• Sort and price donated goods.
• Design and update shop displays.
• Share our story with customers.
• Support us to raise the crucial funds to continue our animal welfare work.

This position might be for you if:

• You like meeting and chatting to new people.
• You have an eye for a good bargain.
• You have a gift for selling.
• You have a big smile and a willingness to learn as you go. Previous sales or retail experience is not necessary.

Time commitment: Flexible. You decide based on how much time you have to give.

Location: Gran Alacant, Guardamar, La Marina, La Siesta, La Zenia, Los Montesinos, Pilar de Horadada and Ciudad Quesada. (Please note our shops do not have air conditioning as this would be extremely costly for us to run. But they do have very good fans!)

Volunteer field clearer

Enjoy being outdoors and around inquisitive and friendly horses, ponies and donkeys? We're seeking volunteer stable labourers to help clean and muck out our fields. While we do have a small team of wonderful full-time employees who work very hard to keep our fields clean, we often need an extra hand when they fall sick, take a day off or during bank holidays. Sometimes just Sue and Rod are left to muck out for more than 100 equines – an enormous job!

Mucking out is a great way to keep fit while getting to know our rescues up close ... they'll often wander over to "help" by nibbling your shoelaces or nuzzling your face.

How you will help:

• Muck out our fields and stables, helping ensure our rescued equines have clean areas to live in.

This position might be for you if:

• You are physically fit.
• You have your own transport.
• You don't mind hard work and are happy to work outdoors.
• You have at least a basic level of English.

Time commitment: While volunteers who have only one day to spare will be considered, preference will be given to people who can commit to coming regularly (perhaps once a week or once a fortnight).

Volunteer horse groomers

We are looking for volunteers who can regularly spare a few hours to brush and groom our equines. We supply you with the brushes and other tools you may need and will work to pair you with horses suited to your level of experience. Grooming is a lovely peaceful way of whiling away a few hours outdoors while directly helping improve the wellbeing of our rescued animals.

How you will help:

• Grooming is an essential part of our equine care routine.
• It is also an important socialising and trust-building exercise for horses with psychological issues caused by previous abuse and neglect.

This position might be for you if:

• You have at least some basic equine experience.
• You have a reasonable level of physical fitness.
• You like being around horses, ponies and donkeys.
• You enjoy being out in the country air.
• You have at least a basic level of English.
• You have your own transport – the rescue centre is not accessible by public transport.

Time commitment: While volunteers who have only one day to spare will be considered, preference will be given to people who can commit to coming regularly (perhaps once a week or once a fortnight).

Horse tour guide and/or café volunteer

We are looking for committed volunteers to lend a hand during our once-a-month Sunday open days. Our open days provide a crucial link to the public, allowing people to meet our equines and hear their incredible survival stories during guided tours of our stables and fields. We also offer lunch and light refreshments in our café on the day.

How you will help:

• Serve our visitors.
• Help with catering.
• Design and update displays.
• Share our equine rescue stories with visitors.
• Lead guided horse tours (if you choose).

This position might be for you if:

• You like meeting and chatting to new people.
• You like being around horses, ponies and donkeys.
• You enjoy being out in the country air.
• You are confident speaking in front of people (if you'd like to become a horse tour guide).
• You have a big smile and a willingness to learn as you go.
• You have your own transport – the rescue centre is not accessible by public transport.

Time commitment: The first Sunday of each month from 12pm to 5pm.

Volunteer marketing and fundraising coordinator

A marketing and fundraising champion is needed to help us raise money for critical centre upgrades and desperately-needed farming equipment. We now care for more than 100 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys, which eat through 29 bales of alfalfa a day. Yet our 68-year-old co-founder Rod Weeding does most of the daily heavy lifting around the stables by hand – and his poor back is taking a battering. A tractor and trailer plus a forklift would dramatically ease this pressure.

We also have several critical upgrade projects pending at the rescue centre, including the replacement of field shelters that blew away in high winds, upgrades to ageing stables, and the building of a secure boundary wall around our fields. A new mini digger is desperately needed for this work, replacing our old machine that now only runs for 15 minutes before beginning to shoot steam!

How you will help:

• Coordinate fundraising campaigns for major facility upgrades and the purchase of farming machinery.
• Contact Spanish companies seeking sponsorship.
• Connect and engage with our supporters via our newsletter and social media.

This position might be for you if:

• You have some marketing and fundraising knowledge. Perhaps you’re a third or fourth year university student looking to expand your experience and portfolio.
• You’re pretty well spoken in both Spanish and English.
• You communicate clearly. You write well. You speak eloquently. You’re comfortable communicating in writing, on the phone and in person.
• You’re not afraid to ask people to donate money to support an excellent cause.
• You’re enthusiastic, independent and creative. You bring fresh ideas and you pay attention to details. You like learning new things and can learn quickly.
• You love horses (and ponies and donkeys) and want to help improve animal welfare in Spain.

Time commitment: We’d need you for a minimum of two hours per week for a minimum of six months duration (preferably longer).

Location: Flexible. This position can be done from the comfort of your own home, but as negotiating with Spanish businesses is likely, you’re preferably based in the Alicante region of Spain.

Volunteer English to Spanish translator

Now that we have a version of our website available in Spanish, we want to share more of our equines' incredible survival stories with Spanish-speakers. These rescue stories (one for each of our 100+ horses, ponies and donkeys!) are slowly being professionally rewritten and edited in English by a small team of volunteers and we’re now looking for native Spanish speakers to help create the translations.

How you will help:

• Translate pre-written horse rescue stories from English to Spanish.
• Help us better connect with kind-hearted Spaniards who are keen to help push animal welfare forward in their own country.

This position might be for you if:

• You have a decent understanding of English and speak Spanish as your native language (or have a very high level of fluency).
• You have a strong grasp of Spanish spelling and grammar.
• You are happy for your work to be edited upon completion by a professional translator who oversees this project. As such, previous translation experience is not necessary.
• You are happy for your work to be permanently displayed on our website and updated by future volunteers as the horse's story progresses.

Time commitment: You can take on as much work as you like, but we prefer each rescue story translation to be completed within one month.

Volunteer photographer

We are looking for a photography whizz to create beautiful images of our rescued horses, ponies and donkeys. We want to celebrate their incredible survival stories with high-quality and compelling photographs, which will be shared with our network of generous supporters across our website and social media. Some photos may also be used in press releases for media and for printed merchandising products such as greeting cards, calendars and posters.

How you will help:

• Shoot a series of beautiful photos of our happy horses, ponies and donkeys.
• Celebrate our animals' survival stories and portray their disabilities in a sensitive manner.
• Help us better connect with supporters and media.

This position might be for you if:

• You have some photography knowledge. Perhaps you’re a third- or fourth-year university student looking to expand your experience and portfolio.
• You own your own camera and lenses and know how to use them well.
• You also know how to properly edit photos for both online and printed use.
• You’re interested in telling the stories of our rescued animals through photos.
• You’re comfortable around large animals and understand that working with horses takes patience and kindness.
• While you will retain copyright over your images, you’re happy to give us unlimited free use of your photos in any format, both while you volunteer with us and after you leave.
• You can speak at least a little English.
• You love horses (and ponies and donkeys) and want to help improve animal welfare in Spain.

Time commitment: You can take on as much work as you like, but we would expect a minimum of 10 useable photographs from a day spent at the rescue centre.

Location: Rojales, Spain to take the pictures, editing can take place anywhere.

Volunteer videographer

We're seeking a videographer to create beautiful videos of our rescued horses, ponies and donkeys. We want to celebrate their incredible survival stories with high-quality and compelling short videos, which will be shared with our network of generous supporters across our website and social media, especially YouTube. Some videos will also be used in press releases for media.

How you will help:

• Film a series of beautiful short videos of our happy horses, ponies and donkeys, and record compelling interviews with our rescue centre co-founders.
• Edit and package your recordings into a series of short videos in a format suitable for use across our website, social media and press releases.
• Celebrate our animals’ survival stories and portray their disabilities in a sensitive manner.

This position might be for you if:

• You have some videography knowledge. Perhaps you’re a third- or fourth-year university student looking to expand your experience and portfolio.
• You own your own video camera and audio recording equipment and know how to use it.
• You also know how to properly edit and caption videos to make them really pop on screen.
• You’re interested in telling the stories of our rescued animals through video.
• You’re comfortable around large animals and understand that working with horses takes patience and kindness.
• You’re happy to give us the rights to unlimited free use of your videos.
• You can speak at least a little English.
• You love horses (and ponies and donkeys) and want to help improve animal welfare in Spain.

We’re extra interested in you if:

• You have some interviewing experience or are keen to learn.
• You have your own car or are able to borrow one easily.
• You know your way around Joomla, Mailchimp and social media – or can very quickly learn.

Time commitment: We’d need you for a minimum of three hours per week for a minimum of six months duration (preferably longer). 

Location: Flexible, though you’re preferably based in the Alicante region of Spain, so coming to our Rojales rescue centre to shoot video isn’t a problem.
