Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.

Our rescued donkeys

Meet the donkeys we've saved from abuse, neglect and abandonment and read their incredible survival stories. You can also meet our rescued horses here and our rescued ponies here.

"Maybe you can't change the world by saving one horse, but you can change the whole world for the horse that you save." – Sue Weeding, Easy Horse Care co-founder.

Bobby

Abandoned along a Murcia canal without any food or water, thin little Bobby was rescued in conjunction with San Javier police. Bobby now lives happily outdoors with donkey friends, likely the first time he's ever been completely free range in a large space.

Chocolate Twinkle & Marble Dingo

These two babies were dumped on a roundabout beside a busy road in an absolutely pitiful state. Police held them in a pen for stray dogs until we arrived. With care and kindness, they are maturing into gentle and friendly donkeys.

Christiana in November 2015

Christiana

Christiana was found barricaded within a tiny wire enclosure and had to be cut free by police. She had a severe eye infection and painfully overgrown hooves. These days she is an extremely affectionate donkey who loves cuddles.

Coco Feb 2018

Coco

Abandoned on the streets, Coco had severe facial wounds caused by a crude rope halter that had grown into her head. She was also very malnourished and suffers laminitis. She'd likely never been treated kindly before, yet Coco is incredibly loving and cuddly.

Donkey Oaty

Once dressed up in costumes and paraded around as a English riding school’s mascot, Donkey Oaty was abandoned along with several horses when the school went bust. A happy-go-lucky young fellow, Donkey Oaty is now a friend to all, both equine and human.

Dulce Dawn on Dec 28 2016

Dulce Dawn

Cruelly hobbled and left to stand alone in torrential rainfall without shelter, Dulce Dawn was a sorry sight. Despite bearing visible scars from her ordeal, she is the kindest and gentlest donkey.

Cesar on August 2 2017

Eeyore

Found wandering along a road, it's clear Eeyore suffered a terrible fate at the hands of his former owner. He has bad scars across his nose and a broken tail but, despite all the abuse, remains an incredibly friendly and inquisitive donkey.

Franky with Harley in Nov 2016

Franky

Found in a young woman's garden, Franky's left front hoof was turned so completely under and backwards that it was like he was walking on his ankle. After life-saving corrective surgery in Barcelona, Franky can now again walk comfortably.

Freddy on May 21 2017 1 photo Elaine Warnock

Freddy

Brought over from the UK by a couple who lacked knowledge, Freddy was skeletal when rescued. As an albino donkey, he's not suited to Spain's hot climate and should have remained in the UK. We would love to find him a home in a cooler, more suitable climate.

Tonic baby Valentino and Gin photo Cassandra Lindahl

Gin, Tonic & baby Valentino

Gin and Tonic were locked inside a filthy and dark barn and left without food or water. Incredibly, Gin gave birth to a healthy colt named Valentino seven months later. This close-knit little family has an unbreakable bond and still live together today.

Minty Monty in November 2016

Minty Monty

Found wandering on a road, Minty Monty was suffering a painful hoof abscess that had likely gone untreated for months. At first very unsociable and frightened, Minty Monty is slowly learning how to be a donkey again in our fields.

Romeo in October 2016

Romeo

Romeo was kept alone in an unsheltered ditch by owners who only returned to give him food and water on weekends. The first donkey we ever rescued, Romeo was in a bad way when he arrived but has bounced back and is now a very happy little guy.

Sancho Panza June 17th 2017 photo Elaine Warnock

Sancho Panza

Sancho is an adorable oddball, perhaps because of his strange childhood: he was found wandering alone in 2013, young and very thin. He was then kept at a dog training centre for a while. Today, Sancho is very independent – and seems to think he's human!
