Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary for the rest of their lives.

Volunteer Expectations – Special Support Roles at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Thank you for your interest in being part of a small team of volunteers who work closely with Susan in the stables area and help wherever there is need around the centre. This is a role that requires flexibility, hard work, and good humour, and we are incredibly grateful to those who are willing to step into it.

What You Will Be Doing
You’ll be working directly with Susan and others in the daily care of our rescued animals. Tasks vary and may include:

  • Feeding the horses and donkeys
  • Cleaning stables and paddocks
  • Supporting with routine tasks such as administering medications or moving animals
  • Helping with maintenance jobs or odd tasks depending on the day’s needs

These volunteers are not bound to the usual 09:00 to 12:00 schedule — your day may start earlier or end later, and we ask that you remain open to this flexibility. Of course, we also recognise the need for rest and breaks and will ensure these are respected.

Social Life
Susan and Rod, the centre’s founders, are deeply committed to the animals, and their days are wholly focused on ensuring their welfare. While you may interact with them regularly, especially Susan, they are not involved in the social side of volunteering and do not provide a shared “community” experience in the way some working holiday hosts might.

They are private individuals whose energy and attention go into the care of the animals. While they are grateful for the help of volunteers, they are not involved in the social or hospitality side of the centre.

Accommodation and Daily Life
If you are staying at the centre, please note:

  • The accommodation is basic but comfortable
  • You will be responsible for your own food, cooking, and shopping
  • You may be the only person staying on-site in the evenings, which some find peaceful and others a little lonely

We recommend bringing entertainment (books, a tablet, or similar) and being prepared for quiet evenings.

Insurance and Personal Responsibility
Volunteers must arrange their own travel and health insurance before arriving. While we do our utmost to create a safe working environment, the work is physical, and minor injuries or accidents can happen. We strongly recommend comprehensive cover that includes medical care, accidents, and third-party liability. Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre cannot be held responsible for any costs arising from illness or injury during your stay.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • You’ll need to be physically fit, able to work outdoors in hot or cold weather, and willing to get dirty
  • The environment can be emotionally intense – we work with animals who have experienced great suffering
  • Some tasks are repetitive or physically demanding, but all are essential
  • We welcome volunteers with all kinds of backgrounds, including those who have experienced life’s challenges. However, this role requires emotional resilience and a capacity to manage your wellbeing independently. The centre is not able to provide therapeutic or mental health support.

What You’ll Gain

  • A real sense of making a difference in the lives of animals
  • Opportunities to learn about equine care and rehabilitation
  • The chance to contribute to a unique and important rescue project
  • A supportive volunteer community who look out for one another

Final Thought
We know this is not for everyone – and that’s okay. But if you thrive on meaningful hard work, can operate independently, and are emotionally mature enough to handle challenges and limited social contact, this could be a life-changing experience.

Thank you for even considering it
